Eco Bears on a Mission to Save Our Seas

March 4, 2021 Be My Bear

Is the Coronavirus pandemic nature’s way of getting its own back on the human race as we continue on our self-destructive route pillaging our planet? Whatever the true origins of the virus, whether it originated on imported salmon in a Wuhan food market or jumped from bats to humans via an intermediary host such as the endangered pangolin, we are all having to come to terms with its deadly consequences and the havoc it has wreaked on all our lives North, South, East and West. No one part of the world has escaped it deadly tentacles but in its aftermath as the vaccination begins its slow global roll-out we have plenty of time to consider the lessons the pandemic has taught us and the need to change tack before it is too late.

During the long groundhog days of lockdown, we have reconnected with nature and nature has responded to the reduction of traffic on our roads, on our railways and in the skies. We have been breathing cleaner air, buying less, recycling more and generally re-booting our consumerism refocussing on what truly matters - family, friends, access to green space and all that entails, from bird-watching and gardening to walking and re-wilding.

Here at Be My Bear we are re-doubling our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint in anyway we can. We have been working for the past two years on a developing a range of plush made from recycled fabric and the timing of our Plush for the Planet range could not have been more appropriate. We wanted to produce a range of Eco products which would conform to high standards of sustainability while also educating children on the importance of animal conservation and the environment. And now, as an industry first, we can proudly say we stock the world’s first sustainable build your own bear line made entirely from 100 per cent recycled materials. We are thrilled to be able to display the Global Recycled Standard and the Textile Exchange stamps of approval with 12 new eco lines. The roll-out began with a range of sea creatures, a turtle, octopus, and great white shark with the intention of raising the issue of the devastating consequences of seas of plastic in our oceans. We have now moved onto other animals joining the Planet Plush range including Boon the Eco Bear, Riley the Rhino and Clementine the Cow.

In addition, we have removed all plastic from the animal ear tags and are phasing out plastic hangers substituting them for recycled cardboard as part of our plastic purge Our box liners are now made of corn starch which is 100 per cent biodegradable and our carry bags and outer packaging are all made using FSC paper made from recycled sources and well managed forests.

We have a long way to go to reduce our carbon footprint but if the pandemic has taught us anything at all, it is that we all have a responsibility to preserve our wonderful planet and all the extraordinary creatures we share it with.
