Build-A-Bear Compatibility Guide
Wondering whether Be My Bear clothes will fit a Build-A-Bear teddy? In many cases, yes - but the answer depends on the size, shape and style of the bear or animal you are trying to dress.
This Build-A-Bear compatibility guide explains which bears are most likely to fit Be My Bear clothing, which characters need extra caution, and how to measure your teddy before ordering. It also clears up some of the confusion around Be My Bear, The Bear Factory, Build-A-Bear Workshop and the wider world of make-your-own teddy bears.
In short: most standard 15" to 18" upright teddy bears and animal friends are usually compatible with Be My Bear 16" clothing. Smaller bears, four-legged animals, unusually shaped licensed characters and mini ranges are less likely to fit.
Are Be My Bear clothes compatible with Build-A-Bear?
Yes, many Be My Bear outfits are compatible with standard Build-A-Bear bears and animals. Our main clothing range is designed for 16" teddy bears and soft toy animals, which means it will often fit Build-A-Bear characters that are a similar size and shape.
The best fit is usually achieved when the bear or animal:
- Measures around 15" to 18" from head to toe
- Stands upright on two legs
- Has a traditional teddy bear body shape
- Has arms and legs in roughly standard positions
- Is not especially wide, long, slim or unusually shaped
If your Build-A-Bear character ticks those boxes, then Be My Bear clothing will usually be a good fit. This makes it easy to mix and match outfits, refresh an existing teddy bear wardrobe, or buy extra clothes for bears your child already owns.
Quick compatibility guide
Use this as a simple starting point before buying:
| Type of bear or soft toy | Likely compatibility | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 15" to 18" upright teddy bear | Usually compatible | This is the best match for Be My Bear 16" clothing. |
| Standard upright animal friend | Often compatible | Usually fine if the animal has a teddy-style body shape. |
| Four-legged animal | Usually not compatible | Body shape and leg position can make clothing fit poorly. |
| Very wide or unusually shaped character | Check before buying | Licensed and novelty characters often vary in shape. |
| Build-A-Bear Buddies | Not compatible | These are smaller than the standard bear range. |
| Mini Beans and other mini plush ranges | Not compatible | These are too small for standard 16" clothing. |
| Giant bears | Not compatible | These are much larger than standard 16" outfits. |
Why is there confusion around Build-A-Bear and Be My Bear?
A lot of confusion surrounds who is who in the world of teddy bear making, especially because several companies have used similar ideas, similar sizing, and similar make-a-bear experiences over the years.
Be My Bear launched its interactive make-a-bear experience in the UK before the Build-A-Bear Workshop brand became widely known here. At that time, Be My Bear offered a range supplied by an American company called The Bear Factory.
Meanwhile, there was also a UK-based chain called The Bear Factory, owned by Hamleys, which opened stores with teddy bear stuffing machines and a range of bears, animals and clothing. This made things confusing for customers because The Bear Factory name was being associated with more than one part of the teddy bear making world.
Build-A-Bear Workshop Inc, an American company, later acquired The Bear Factory and Amsbra Ltd, its UK franchisee. The UK Bear Factory stores became part of Build-A-Bear Workshop, while the American Bear Factory supplier continued separately. Be My Bear continued to supply make-your-own bear kits, bear clothing and teddy bear party products in the UK.
That history is one of the reasons customers still ask whether Be My Bear products fit Build-A-Bear teddies. The good news is that the sizing of many standard teddy bears remains similar enough for clothing to be interchangeable in many cases.
What size are Be My Bear clothes designed for?
Most Be My Bear clothing is designed for our 16" teddy bears and animal friends. This is a popular size for make-your-own bear kits, bear parties and teddy bear clothes because it is large enough for children to dress and cuddle, but not so large that outfits become awkward or expensive.
A 16" bear is measured from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet. As soft toys vary in shape, this measurement should be treated as a guide rather than an exact clothing size. Two bears can both be described as 16", but one may have a wider body, shorter legs, longer arms or a bigger head than the other.
That is why shape matters as much as height. A standard upright teddy bear shape is normally the safest choice.
How to measure your Build-A-Bear before ordering clothes
Before buying clothes for a Build-A-Bear teddy, we recommend measuring the bear at home. You do not need anything complicated - a simple measuring tape is enough.
Measure the bear from the top of its head to the bottom of its feet. If it measures roughly 15" to 18" and stands upright on two legs, it is usually within the right size range for Be My Bear 16" clothing.
For a more careful check, look at these areas too:
- Height: Around 15" to 18" is usually the best range.
- Body width: Very wide bears may make tops, dresses or onesies feel tight.
- Leg shape: Trousers and dungarees work best on bears with two separate legs.
- Arm position: Tops and jackets are easier to fit on bears with standard arm placement.
- Tail, wings or accessories: These may affect how some outfits sit.
- Head size: Hats and hooded outfits may not fit characters with oversized heads, ears or horns.
If the bear is close to the standard teddy shape, the chances of a good fit are much higher.
Which Build-A-Bear characters are most likely to fit Be My Bear clothing?
The most compatible Build-A-Bear characters are usually traditional teddy bears and upright animal friends. These are the characters that most closely match the shape of Be My Bear 16" bears.
For example, Be My Bear clothing is most likely to fit:
- Classic teddy bears
- Traditional bears with arms and legs
- Upright bunny, dog, cat or animal designs
- Soft toy animals that stand on two legs
- Characters with a body shape similar to a standard teddy bear
These bears normally work well with tops, dresses, skirts, trousers, pyjamas, costumes, school uniforms, sports outfits and many other 16" teddy bear clothes.
Which Build-A-Bear characters may not fit?
Some Build-A-Bear characters are not shaped like standard teddy bears. These can be harder to dress, even if they are technically a similar height.
We advise caution with:
- Four-legged animals
- Characters with very long bodies
- Characters with very wide bodies
- Characters with oversized heads
- Characters with wings, shells, fins, large tails or unusual features
- Characters that sit differently from a normal bear
- Mini, giant or novelty plush ranges
- Licensed characters with unique body shapes
Some licensed ranges and character plush designs can have proportions that are very different from a normal bear. Examples may include certain Pokemon, My Little Pony, Paw Patrol, Finding Dory, film characters, game characters and other novelty designs. These are not always suitable for standard 16" teddy bear clothes.
This does not mean every licensed character will be incompatible, but it does mean you should check carefully before ordering.
What about Build-A-Bear Buddies?
Build-A-Bear Buddies are smaller pre-stuffed characters designed to complement the main Build-A-Bear range. Because they are much smaller than standard 15" to 18" teddy bears, they are not compatible with Be My Bear 16" clothing.
If you are buying for a Build-A-Bear Buddy, you will need clothing specifically made for smaller plush toys. Standard teddy bear clothes will be too large.
What about Build-A-Bear Mini Beans?
Build-A-Bear Mini Beans and other mini plush ranges are also too small for Be My Bear 16" clothing. These smaller collectable plush toys are not designed around the same body size as a standard bear.
Although they are lovely as collectables, they should not be treated as clothing-compatible with standard 16" teddy bear outfits.
What about giant Build-A-Bear teddies?
Giant bears are much larger than standard 16" bears, so Be My Bear clothing will not fit them. If your bear is noticeably larger than the usual Build-A-Bear size range, standard teddy bear clothes will be too small.
As a simple rule: if the bear is much taller than 18", it is probably outside the intended size range for Be My Bear clothing.
Can Build-A-Bear clothes fit Be My Bear bears?
In many cases, yes. Clothes made for standard Build-A-Bear bears will often fit Be My Bear 16" bears and animal friends. This means your child may be able to mix and match outfits between their existing bear collection and new Be My Bear characters.
As with all teddy bear clothing, fit can vary depending on the exact outfit. Loose-fitting items such as dresses, T-shirts, capes, pyjamas and simple costumes are usually more forgiving. More fitted items such as trousers, dungarees, shoes or hooded outfits may depend more heavily on the bear's proportions.
Which types of teddy bear clothes are the easiest to fit?
Some outfit styles are more flexible than others. If you are buying clothing for a Build-A-Bear and are not completely sure about the fit, these are often safer choices:
- T-shirts
- Dresses
- Skirts
- Capes
- Loose costumes
- Simple tops
- Pyjamas
These styles usually have more room and are less dependent on exact leg length or body proportions.
Which types of teddy bear clothes need more care?
Some clothing styles need a closer fit, so they are more likely to vary from bear to bear. Take extra care with:
- Trousers
- Dungarees
- Onesies
- Hooded outfits
- Footwear
- Hats
- Outfits that need to fasten tightly around the body
These items may still fit a standard Build-A-Bear teddy, but it is worth checking the bear's measurements and shape carefully before ordering.
Are Be My Bear bear making kits compatible with Build-A-Bear clothing?
Be My Bear 16" bears and animal friends are generally a good size for many standard teddy bear outfits, including clothing made for similar-sized make-your-own bear ranges. If you already have Build-A-Bear clothes at home, they may fit Be My Bear bears well.
This is one of the reasons many families enjoy building a mixed collection. A child can make a new bear with Be My Bear, then dress it using outfits they already own, or choose new outfits from our teddy bear clothing range.

Can I buy Be My Bear clothes for a bear I already own?
Yes. Many customers buy Be My Bear clothes for bears and soft toys they already have at home. You do not need to own a Be My Bear teddy to enjoy our clothing range.
Our outfits are especially popular for:
- Refreshing an old favourite teddy
- Dressing a Build-A-Bear character
- Adding new outfits to a child's bear collection
- Buying birthday or Christmas accessories
- Creating themed teddy bear gifts
- Adding clothing to bears used at parties, schools or groups
If your bear is around 16" and has a traditional teddy bear shape, Be My Bear clothing may be a great option.
Choosing the right outfit for your bear
When choosing an outfit, think about both the size of the bear and the style of clothing. A simple dress or T-shirt may fit a wider range of bears than a fitted trouser outfit. A costume with a hood may depend on the bear's ears, head shape or horns. Footwear may not fit animals with unusual feet.
If you are buying for a child, it is also worth choosing outfits that are easy to put on and take off. Teddy bear dressing should be fun, not frustrating. Outfits with simple fastenings and flexible shapes are usually best for younger children.
Build-A-Bear compatibility examples
Here are a few common examples to help you decide:
Standard teddy bear
A traditional upright teddy bear measuring around 16" is usually the best match. Most Be My Bear clothing should fit this type of bear well.
Upright animal friend
An upright bunny, dog, cat, monkey, dinosaur or similar animal may fit Be My Bear clothing if it has a teddy-style body shape. Check the body width, leg position and head size.
Four-legged animal
A four-legged animal is unlikely to fit standard teddy bear clothing properly. Tops may sit oddly, trousers will usually not work, and outfits may not fasten correctly.
Licensed character
Licensed characters vary widely. Some are close to a teddy bear shape, while others are completely different. Check carefully before buying.
Mini plush or Buddy
Mini plush toys, Buddies and smaller collectable characters are too small for standard Be My Bear 16" clothing.
Giant plush
Giant bears are too large for Be My Bear clothing and will need clothing made specifically for oversized plush toys.
Common questions about Build-A-Bear compatibility
Do Be My Bear clothes fit all Build-A-Bear teddies?
No. Be My Bear clothes do not fit every Build-A-Bear teddy or character. They are most likely to fit standard upright bears and animals around 15" to 18" tall. Unusual shapes, mini ranges, giant bears and four-legged characters may not be compatible.
Do Be My Bear clothes fit 16" Build-A-Bear bears?
Usually, yes. If the bear is around 16" tall and has a standard teddy bear body shape, Be My Bear clothing will often fit well.
Will Be My Bear clothes fit Pokemon Build-A-Bear characters?
Some Pokemon characters have unusual shapes, large heads, different limb positions or non-standard bodies. We recommend checking carefully before ordering. Many are not suitable for standard teddy bear clothes.
Will Be My Bear clothes fit Paw Patrol Build-A-Bear characters?
Four-legged characters and characters with different body shapes are usually not a good fit for standard 16" teddy bear clothes. Check measurements and shape before buying.
Will Be My Bear clothes fit My Little Pony Build-A-Bear characters?
These characters are usually shaped differently from standard teddy bears, so Be My Bear clothing is unlikely to fit correctly.
Do Be My Bear clothes fit Build-A-Bear Buddies?
No. Build-A-Bear Buddies are smaller than standard bears, so Be My Bear 16" clothing will be too large.
Do Be My Bear clothes fit Build-A-Bear Mini Beans?
No. Mini Beans are much smaller than standard bears and are not compatible with Be My Bear 16" clothing.

Please check our current returns policy before ordering. If you are unsure about compatibility, we recommend contacting us first with a photo and measurements of your bear so we can advise before you buy.
